The Tree of Liberty

Once upon a time, not so long ago in a land not so far away, a founder of a country and a president understood and said…

“The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time

with the blood of patriots and tyrants.”

Thomas Jefferson

Today, this same tree – still rooted, trunk-ed, limbed, branched, and twigged grows, for it is alive. But parasites also, live off its life.

Its leaves once green and teeming with life are now green with envy, selfishness and greed.

It’s fruit once abundant, flourishing and more than enough to provide for its future, are now the fruits of lust for power and for control.

Ignorant and blind, WE once the People rise no more to challenge or to care. OUR throats are throttled by – ‘me, myself and I.’  And WE are led by the nose as some beast or pushed along by cattle prod.

When WE no more serve one another, the little wee of us remaining, are shackled slaves to self and to each other. And at our backs…

…the whips of masters.

Once the tree was founded upon the rights to “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.” Now it is as if, the tree had fallen by feller’s ax, cut and pulped to paper, and are now shelved books – forgotten, unread, unsung and unknown.

And if this tree becomes no more even a whisper in the night of obscurity or a dead ember in the memory, it will still grow albeit changed, until there is no more life in it, for…
